Battle Sites and WW2 History
The Battle of Okinawa was one of the bloodiest in World War II and over 1/4 of the island’s population is thought to have perished. Some of the most vicious fighting took place in the south of the island and this tour brings you to some of the most significant sites.
WW2 & Historical Okinawa
Tomori Stone Lion
The stone shisa from the most iconic photo of the Battle of Okinawa is still there, and we can go to see it.
Himeyuri WW2 Museum
One of the best places to learn about the Battle of Okinawa. You will be moved (prepare to cry).
Peace Memorial Park and Museum
Okinawa’s best-known WW2 memorial.
Hacksaw Ridge & Urasoe Castle
Okinawa’s most famous WW2 site, an important shrine, with stunning views both north and south and a museum*.
*Museum may be closed when we get there, depending on tour sequence.
Tour Notes
The museum stops on this tour are long and investing considerable time absorbing all there is to witness is highly recommended. Purchasing flowers to leave at the monument outside the Himeyuri Museum is optional but strongly encouraged. It is possible to visit Peace Memorial park without entering the museum, but entry fee is well worth the price.
It might be difficult to attend the museum at Hacksaw Ridge on this tour because of the closing time, but it is recommended because of its focus on Urasoe Castle. Hacksaw Ridge itself is open at night, and the views are spectacular.
