Oujima Island and Southern Spiritual Sites

Walking the rustic alleys of Oujima, an island based on Okinawa’s fishing culture, you witness a more traditional side of Okinawa. The island is famous for its tempura and its spiritual depth, with shrines and quiet places of worship everywhere.  Seifa Utaki was once considered one of Okinawa’s holiest places and remains a heritage site of great cultural importance. Tamagusuku Castle Ruins dates from the Gusuku era in Okinawan history and its true origins remain a mystery lost to time.

Tour Notes

Seifa Utaki closes at 5PM and most of the restaurants on Oujima close shop in late afternoon. It is best to plan to have lunch on Oujima. Hamagawa Utaki is open 24 hours, but it is best seen during daylight. It is usually best to stop at Tamagusuku Castle last because it is always open and not dangerous at night.
